What is a knowledge-rich curriculum?
At its core, a knowledge-rich curriculum enables all children, regardless of background, to be provided with the opportunities to succeed in later life. A knowledge-rich curriculum exposes children to ambitious content that has been highly specified and well-sequenced, leaving nothing to chance. Within schools, time is limited, and a knowledge-rich curriculum ensures that each precious moment will support children in acquiring the knowledge, skills and cultural capital that they will need to become well-educated citizens of the future.
The key principles of a knowledge-rich curriculum are that:
- Knowledge is valued and specified
- Knowledge is well-sequenced
- Knowledge is taught to be remembered

Our ambition is for each subject to be valued in this way, with our children experiencing what it means to be a historian, a geographer, a technician and an artist. This will be achieved through being specific with the core knowledge we want children to know, as it helps unlock future learning and further understanding of the world around them. We want our children to develop a bank of vocabulary that enables them to articulate what they are thinking, but also to help them understand more challenging texts and access parts of culture that are new and unfamiliar to them.
Through the support of supplementing resources, we aim to have an ambitious and well-sequenced curriculum for all subject areas, allowing for key concepts to thrive and key knowledge to be remembered. Through careful thought of when to teach content and why, as well as revisiting prior learning, we hope our children remember the core learning of each subject when they leave us in Year 6.
