Design and Technology (DT)

In Early Years, the development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity.

It is important that children have regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. The quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts. The frequency, repetition and depth of their experiences are fundamental to their progress in interpreting and appreciating what they hear, respond to and observe. Our provision is planned so that opportunities to create, design, build and make are plentiful, either through focused group activities or through the child-initiated provision. Where possible, art and design activities will link to a broader theme such as the ones below.

For Ks1 and Ks2, through the use of Primary Knowledge Curriculum materials, we plan to deliver an ambitious and challenging Design and Technology curriculum. This includes a termly project focusing on either building, sewing or cooking. The projects require 5 hours of teaching and depending on what is best for the project, these could be completed in a day, across two mornings or three afternoons. Our Design and Technology curriculum is also supplemented by our Art provision, with units in Art focusing on embroidery, needlework and weaving, as well as architecture.
